Another Old Settler Gone
Friends and Relatives Mourn the Loss of Claus Eichner

Another of Hartley's Pioneers passed away this week when Claus Eichner died after being confined to his bed for the past two weeks with pernicious anemia. [Note: Death Certificate gives cause of death as cirrhosis of the liver.] He had not been well for the past two years. Mr. Eichner was one of the pioneers of this county, having come here in 1889 from Davenport, Iowa. He emigrated from Germany with his parents when but a lad of ten years and settled at Davenport.

He was born in Germany July 3, 1851, and passed away at his home in Hartley, Iowa, March 31, 1930, at the age of 78 years and nine months.

Mr. Eichner was a man of generous impulses, and never forgot the hospitable ways of the pioneer. It was the writer's good fortune to have known him long and well, and we only knew him to esteem him more highly as the years passed by. He had borne adversity bravely, and had filled the various relations of life as son, husband, father, and friend well. Who can do more? His life work was done and well done.

Mr. Eichner farmed near Hartley for a number of years and then retired, moving to town. They celebrated their golden wedding five years ago with their family and friends.

Besides a devoted, aged wife, Mrs. Hannah. M. Eichner, he leaves three sons, Julius F. Eichner, Leonard C. Eichner; one son, Emil P and one daughter, Adelia, having preceded him in death. He also leaves Anna Eichner, Alma Eichner, and Lillian M. Eichner, wives of his three sons, eight grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the home at 2 o'clock with Rev. Ben Riner, pastor of the Methodist church of Sheldon officiating. Interment was in Pleasant View Cemetery.

Those from a distance attending the funeral were Anna Ketelson of Dixon, Iowa, a sister of Mr. Eichner, Leonard G. Eichner of Chippewa Falls, Wis., Mr. and Mrs. Byron Paulsen from Steen, Minnesota, and Mr.and Mrs. Pete Eichner and family of Worthington, Minnesota.
