Evan Rice Weale, the son of Thomas and Lizzie Barner Weale, was born July 12, 1918, at Sutherland, IA. He graduated from Sutherland High School in 1936 and attended college for two years at Ames, majoring in Horticulture.
He worked for two years before entering the United States Army during World War II on January 1, 1942, at Fort Des Moines, Iowa. His overseas duty was from February 11, 1944, until October 6, 1945, in Europe, where he saw action in the Ardennes, Central Europe, Normandy, Northern France and the Rhineland, receiving the Bronze Star. He received his Honorable Discharge on October 12, 1945, at Fort Dix, N.J.
He was united in marriage to Alice Bertram on Nov. 14, 1945, at Redwood, NY. They made their home on a farm near Sutherland, until moving into town in 1980. Evan was a member of the United Methodist Church, where he was active as a Sunday School Teacher, Superintendent and was a charter member and past president of the Methodist Men. He was also a member of the American Legion, the Masonic Lodge, and the Eastern Star. He had served as the O'Brien County Representative to the Northwest Iowa Aging Association.
Evan passed away at Sutherland on October 29, 1994, at the age of 76.
Preceding him in death were his parents; one sister, Maureen and her husband, Loren Ewoldt.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Alice; one son, Dennis and his wife, Cindy of Omaha; two daughters, Cheryl and her husband, Dom Viola of Youngstown, OH, and Nancy and her fiance Tim Benson of Omaha; three grandchildren, Cory and Kevin Weale; a step-granddaughter, Carrie Viola; one sister, Ruth (Mrs. A.L. - Bud) Rine of Davenport, FL; other relatives and friends.
