Funeral services for Amos Teakle, 90, Hartley's oldest resident, were held Friday afternoon at the Methodist church with Rev. T.E. Hoon in charge. The masonic services were conducted by L.O. Lampman of Primghar. Interment was made by the side of his wife in Pleasant View cemetery.

Amos Teakle was born on June 20, 1850, the oldest of the eight children of Thomas and Jane Gemmill Teakle at Lewistown, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, of Scotch and English parentage.

He was reared on a farm and in 1869 moved with his parents to a farm near Harper, Keokuk County, Iowa. On March 11, 1875, he was married to Miss Maggie Both, a native of Arbroath, Scotland. They established a home in the Harper community. They were the parents of three children: Mrs. Agnes Moore of Hartley, Thomas of Spokane, Washington, and Mrs. Jennie Davis of Mitchell, S.D.

The family moved to a farm in Audubon county in 1883 where they resided until 1892 when they moved to a farm near Moneta.

Mr. and Mrs. Teakle moved to Hartley in 1899 and during their residence here, Mr. Teakle managed an elevator for a number of years and later managed the Flooete Lumber yards at Plessis for about fifteen years.

Mrs. Teakle passed away on November 8, 1918 and since that time, Mr. Teakle has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Agnes Moore.

He served as town councilman for six years after which he was mayor for six years, retiring from that office at the age of 82 years. He was a charter member of the Hartley Knights of Pythias and a member of the Masonic lodge for 41 years. He died Tuesday morning, November 26, 1940 in his sleep after one day of illness.

He is survived by his three children: Mrs. Agnes Moore of Hartley, Thomas Takle of Spokane, Washington, and Mrs. Jennie Davis of Mitchell SD; one son-in-law, James Davis of Mitchell, S.D.; one brother, Walter G. of South English, Iowa; three grandchildren, Mrs. Herman Johnson of Hartley, Charles D. Moore of Rockford, Illinois, and Mrs. Perry Johnson of Lake Park; and two great grandchildren, Jae Amos Johnson and Hugh Wayne Johnson of Hartley.

An interesting fact in the life of Mr. Teakle was that of the six children who reached maturity, he was the oldest child and so far has reached the greatest age even though all of them had attained the age of seventy or more years.

Those from out of town attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. C.E. Kenyon of Archer, J.A. Johnson and daughters, Nettie and Edna, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Johnson, Mr. and Mrs. Vernal Goodell, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Magee, and Mr. and Mrs. Perry Johnson, all of Lake Park; and Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Davis of Mitchell, S.D.
