James Eli Vale, whose death was chronicled in the columns of this paper last week, was born at East Carmel, Columbiana county, Ohio, March 31, 1833, and died June 3, 1902, aged 69 years, 2 months and 2 days. He was of English descent, his ancesters coming to America prior to the revolution.
He was married to Angelina Metz, January 4, 1855, who still survives. In less than three years they would have been married fifty years.To them were born ten children, eight of whom are living. Their eldest son died in Infancy at Wapello, Iowa. Their third daughter, Mrs. A. H. Holland, died at Chicago, December 14,1895. The living are: Mrs. Laura Greisenhof, Cairo, Ill.; Mrs.Elizabeth Anthony , and Mrs. Kate Faro, Chicago, Ill.; Mrs. D. T. Stewart and Mrs. J. S. Messer, Hartley, Iowa.; Charles Vale, Belvidere, Ill.; Howard Vale , Atlantic , Iowa.; Ed L. Vale , Columbus Grove, Ohio.
Mr. Vale was burn into the Quaker church, his parents being of that faith. Later in life he became a member of the M. E. church and at the time of his death he was a member of St. James M. E. church, Chicago, Rev. Robert Mclntire, pastor. He early in life united with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and Free and Accepted Masons.
The funeral services were held at the residence of Dr. D. T. Stewart at 2 o'clock p. m. Friday, June 6, and were under the auspices of the Masonic lodge. Prayer by Rev. O. S. Bryan. Interment was in Hartley cemetery.
