Charlie Fred Centner (1888-1967)

Charlie Fred Centner, the son of John and Christine Matter Centner, was born Feb. 29, 1888 in Iowa County, Iowa. He passed away on December 14, 1967 at Sioux City, Iowa, following a short illness, having reached the age of 79 years, 9 months and 15 days.

He came with his parents to Osceola County as a small child. Here he was baptized as an infant and after his parochial school instruction, was confirmed in the Lutheran faith on May 24, 1903 at St. John's Lutheran Church in May City. Here he also received his public school education. While a resident of Osceola County, he remained a faithful member of St. John's.

In March of 1951 he and his wife retired from farming and moved to Hartley. At the time of his death he was a faithful member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Hartley. He was also a member of the church's voter assembly.

On February 8, 1912 he was married to Sadie Philiph at the parents' home. To them were born four children: Esther. Version. Laona and Ctertoe.

Preceding him in death were his parents, two sisters, Ida and Bertha, and a son-in-law, Harold C. Jass.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Sadie; his four children, Esther (Mrs. Waldo Hansen) of Everly, Vernon of Hartley, Leona (Mrs. Wilbur Wacker) of Hartley and Clarice (Mrs. Robert Fahlenkamp) of Hartley; ten grandchildren; five great grandchildren; one brother, Otto Centner of Wiley, Colo.; two sisters, Emma (Mrs. Mansel Ridinger) of Littleton, Colo., and Miss Edna Centner of Primghar, Iowa; several nieces and nephews, other relatives and his many friends.

Last rites were held, with Baumgarten's Funeral Home in charge of arrangements, from St. Paul's Lutheran Church on December 18 at 11 a.m. Rev. A. O. Bleeke officiated. Honorary pallbearers were John Folkers, Amos Lloyd, Carl Wacker, Edwin Philiph, Chris Holle and Otto Klatt. Active pallbearers were Sylvester Holle. Dale Wacker, Duane Philiph, Max Robinson, Gerald Gonnerman and Richard Philiph.

Interment was made in Pleasant View Cemetery.
