Mrs. John Centner, nee Christina Suzanna Matter, was born on April 12, 1864, in Leibenstadt, Germany , where she was baptized as an infant in the Lutheran faith, and where she was later received into communicant membership through the rite of confirmation. At the age of 13 years, she came to America, making her home with relatives near Amana in Iowa County, Iowa.

On October 8, 1885, she was united in marriage with John J. Centner, who preceded her in death by twenty years, departing this life on August 6, 1928, at the age of 71 years.

The first ten years of her married life the deceased lived on a farm near Amana, Iowa. In 1895, the Centner family moved on a farm near May City, in Osceola County, where they lived for 17 years. For the past 35 years, witht he exception of the last few months, the deceased was a resident of the town of Hartley.

In October of the past year, due to infirmities attendant upon her age, she went to Spencer to make her home with her daughter, Mrs. Ben Philiph. The last several months of her life she was cared for at the Delaney Nursing Home, where she passed away last Wednesday morning at the age of 84 years and 5 days.

The deceased was the mother of six children: two sons and four daughters, five of whom survive. One child, a daughter, named Ida, departed this life on January 14, 1904, at the age of 12 years. The surviving children are: Bertha, (Mrs. Ben Philiph), Emma (Mrs. Mansel Ridinger), Edna, all living in Spencer; Charles of Hartley; and Otto of Wiley, Colorado.

Surviving relatives in addition to these children include a brother: Henry Matter, of Minonk, Illinois; one sister, Caroline, living in Germany; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren.

The deceased was a devout and active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and Ladies' Aid, a kind hearted mother, and a faithful friend.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. A.C. Weber, in the local Lutheran Church, on Friday, April 19. A.C. Hoper, Edwin Philiph, Herbert Weber, Henry Peters, Jr. Carl Rahn, and Edward Peters were the pall-bearers. The church quartet sang the funeral hymns. The body was laid to rest beside that of her husband in Pleasant View Cemetery.

Earl Matter of Atkins, Iowa, Mr . an d Mrs. Carl Matter and Charlotte of Cedar Rapids, Ia., Mrs. Will Matter o f Hopkinton, Iowa , Mr . an d Mrs. James Rost of Des Moines, Iowa , and Mr. and Mrs. Duane Rost of Fords, New Jersey. Mr . Ben Philiph suffered a heart attack the morning of the funeral and therefore was unable to attend.
