Clair S. Welch (1900-1966)

Mr. Clair S. Welch, son of William T. and Eva Duff Welch, was born November 19, 1900, on a farm south of Hartley, Iowa in O'Brien County. He passed away at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa, February 7, 1966, at the age of 65 years, 2 months, and 18 days.

He lived in the Hartley area where he attended Hartley High School and as a graduate of Sweeney Automotive School of Kansas City, Missouri, in 1919.

On August 22, 1923, he was united in marriage to Vera Mae Jones of Hartley, Iowa and to this union were born two daughters and two sons, all of whom survive him. Mrs. Don (Hope) Donaghy of Cedar Rapids, Mrs. Wayne (Jeanne) Spoonemore of Brooklyn, New York, Keith C. Welch of Ankeny, Iowa, and Bill D. Welch of Minneapolis, Minnesota; four grandsons and six granddaughters. Also surviving him is his mother, Mrs. Eva Welch of Hartley, two brothers, and four sisters.

Mr. Welch lived in the Hartley area until 1943 at which time he moved his family to Spokane, Washington. In 1948 he took of operation of Welch's Variety Store at Monona, Iowa until 1957 when he assumed the duties of custodian for the North Polk Community School District at Polk City, Iowa.

He was a member of the Methodisst Church of Monona, Iowa, Beacon Lodge No. 495 of Hartley, Iowa, and Chapter of Easter Star No. 238 of Postville, Iowa.

Pallbearers were: Vern Donnenworth, Edward Olhausen, Elvis Waiters, Adolf Goetsch, Bill Lux, and Harold Lux.
