Roy Penning (1883-1975)

Roy Penning, son of Harmon and Mary Penning, was born in Illinois on July 15, 1883. He lived his youth and attended school in this vicinity. In 1909 he moved to South Dakota where he homesteaded for a number of years and later moved to Doon, Iowa where he was engaged in farming.

He graduated from the Palmer School of Chiropractic at Davenport, Iowa, in 1922.

He was united in marriage to Lena Smith in 1913. She preceded him in death in 1924. One son, Edwin, was born to this union.

He was united in marriage to Belle McNeil in 1926. After their marriage they lived in Riceville, Ill. until moving to Sanborn, Iowa in 1937. He practiced in Sanborn until his retirement and on March 12, 1970, Roy and Belle entered the Prairie View Retirement Home in Sanborn where he lived until the time of his death on November 15, 1976, at the age of 93 years and four months.

He is survived by his wife, Belle, of Sanborn, Iowa; one son, Edwin of Summitville, Indiana; two grandchildren; and two brothers, Eugene of Spencer, Iowa and Clarence of Missouri.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lena, in 1924; his parents; and one sister, Inez.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Sanborn, Iowa. Funeral services were held November 15 at the Sanborn Funeral Home of Sanborn with The Rev Frank Koksma, officiating. Casket bearers were Robert Lowery, Orion Thomas, Wilmer Van Engen, Levoy Thomas, Howard Postma and Franklin Frohwein. Mrs. Gene Van Veldhuizen and Mrs. Ivan Van Veldhuizen sang two hymns, "In the Garden" and "The Old Rugged Cross". Mrs. Hessel Dykstra accompanied.

Interment was in Roseland Cemetery with Sanborn Funeral Home in charge.
