The Sentinel is called upon this week to announce the death of Rose A. Miller, who passed away at the home of her brother, Fred, at Winside, Nebraska a few minutes after ten a. m. Sunday last. The receipt of the news in this city cast a shadow over the entire city and the news spread over the community as if on the wings of the wind.
Her illness dates back to about Christmas time when she contracted a slight cold and from that date on she seemed to fail as wither the flowers in the chill months of fall. She was constantly under the care of physicians and her hope of recovery was mirrored to her friends, but the hard master, Death, was not to be baffled and she was called from those who loved her fondly to that home where the rare flowers await that last judgement day.
Rose was born in Hartley township just north of this city and from babyhood to her last days upon this earth won friends by her cheerful smiles and her winning ways. She was a general favorite among her school mates and carried sunshine wherever she went. She was of the class of '22 and though her illness came at a time when she needed all of her strength to carry forward her school work she did not fail but graduated last June.
A few weeks ago she went to the home of her brother at Winside and had been taking treatments at Sioux City, that point being easily reached from there. But a few days ago she appeared to suffer a relapse and she did not rally. Her father wa s present when she passed away, having arrived there the night previous.
The remains were brought to this city for interment and the services were held at the M. E. church at 2 p. m. Tuesday. Members of the class of '22 acted as pall bearers and the choir was made up of her classmates. The remains were laid at rest in Pleasant View cemetery, the casket being covered with flowers sent by her scores of friends.
Rose A. Miller, the youngest of the three children born to August and Mary Miller, was born in Hartley township, O'Brien County, Iowa November 18, 1904, and passed away from this life at the home of her brother at Winside Nebraska, on July 9th, 1922, at the age of seventeen years, seven months and eleven days.
When she was about two years of age, the family moved into the town of Hartley which has since been her home. She was a fine student, highly esteemed by her classmates and acquaintances.
She received Christian Baptism May 23, 1905, and was affiliated with the Sunday School of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
She is survived by her sorrowing parents, Mr. and Mrs. August Miller of Hartley, Iowa, and one brother, F.G. Miller of Winside, Nebraska.
Death is a hard master. He would take from us our brightest and best, crush us in the sunset of our lives, but he cannot mar memory, or tear from our midst the sunshine which Rose strew daily. There may be a balm for the wounded hearts, but the clouds are too dense for it to penetrate at this hour.
When we see a precious blossom
That we tended with such care,
Rudely taken from our bosom
How our aching hearts despair!
Round its little grave we linger
Til the setting sun is low.
Feeling all our hopes have perished
With the flower we cherished so.
We shall sleep, but not forever.
There will be a glorious dawn;
We shall meet to part, no noever
On the resurrection morn.Hartley (Iowa) Sentinel, 13 Jul 1922, p1
