August Miller, resident of Hartley and vicinity for the past 25 years, passed away at his home last Friday after an illness of several months.
August Miller, the son of Henry Miller and Elizabeth, nee Eckert, was born on the 12th day of April, 1861 at Highrohde in Germany. Here he was baptized in infancy and later confirmed into the faith of the Evangelical Lutheran church. In 1873 the parents left the old country to seek and find their fortune in the new world. But on the way the father died aboard the ship. The widow and the children, however, proceeded and in 1884 came to Benton county, Iowa.
On January 8 of the same year our departed friend was united in marriage with Miss Marie Huebener. Their union was blessed with three children. In 1898, they moved to a farm south of Hartley and later acquired a farm north of Hartley. However, Mr. Miller's health made it necessary for him to retire from active duties and they moved to Hartley in January, 1906.
Last year it became evident that he was suffering from an incurable disease and gradually grew weaker until on last Friday evening at 10 o'clock death relieved him of all hardships and disappointments of life, having attained the age of 70 years, 9 months and 23 days.
One son, Charles, and one daughter, Rose, preceded their father in death.
He leaves his widow, Mrs. Marie Miller, one son, Fred Miller of Winside, Nebr, one grandson, George, attending Valparaiso University, one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Fred Miller, and two sisters in the state of Illinois.
Mr. Miller was a member of Trinity Evangelical church of Hartley and of the Order of Odd Fellows.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. F. W . Budy at 1:45 at the Temple Funeral Home and at 2 o'clock on Sunday afternoon, Feb 7th at the Trinity Church. The Brotherhood Chorus sang several beautiful selections. Interment at Pleasant View cemetery.
