Edwin Orthmann, 97, of Sutherland died June 20, 2004 at the Sutherland Care Center. A funeral Service was held Wednesday, June 23rd at 10:30 AM at the United Methodist Church with Rev. Dennis Hopes officiating. Pianists were Lee Ann Bigler and Joel Orthmann. Casket bearers were "All of his Grandchildren". Interment was at Waterman Cemetery in Sutherland.

Edwin Orthmann, the son of Henry and Wilhemina Appeldorn Orthmann, was born March 4, 1907, in Paullina, IA. At the age of three, the family moved to a farm north of Sutherland, IA, where he resided for 81 years. He received his early education in the country schools and graduated from Sutherland High School in 1923.

Ed married Nellie Troxel on February 9, 1927, in Primghar, IA. Following their marriage, they continued to farm the family farm until 1955. They remained on the farm until 1992, when they moved to Sutherland. After retiring, he and Nellie enjoyed many years of travel, fishing, and playing cards. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Sutherland where he was active in the Methodist Men's Club. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Ruritan Club, and an elevator Board Director for nearly 20 years.

Edwin passed away at the Sutherland Care Center in Sutherland, IA, on Sunday, June 20, 2004, at the age of 97. He was proceeded in death by his parents; his wife, Nellie on October 10, 2000; one son, Robert on January 18, 2004; one granddaughter, Lori Beth Thiessen; one brother, Delbert and one sister, Velma.

Left to cherish his memory are his children and their spouses: Kenneth & Beverly Orthmann of Sutherland, IA; Barbara & Daniel Thiessen of Escondido, CA; Patricia and Robert Engel of Paullina, IA; Gary & Mary Orthmann of Sutherland, IA; Margie & Floyd Jacobs of Casselberry, FL; a daughter-in-law, Betty Orthmann, of Peterson, IA; 51 grandchildren; 60 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Herman Orthmann, of Sutherland, IA; as well as other relatives and many friends.
