Herman Orthmann, the son of Henry and Wilhelmina Appeldorn Orthmann, was born July 11,1903 in Paullina, Iowa. At a young age, the family moved to a farm north of Sutherland. He attended rural schools and graduated from Sutherland High School in 1921.

On June 2,1927 he was united in marriage to Ivea Kesterson in Spencer, Iowa. Following their marriage, they started farming in Grant Township. In 1931 they moved to a farm southeast of Paullina and lived there until 1951, when they moved to a farm north of Sutherland. He resided on this farm until 2000, when he moved into the Sutherland Care Center. He passed away here on October 26,2004, at the age of 101.

Herman and Ivea were married 73 years and danced their last dance on their 70th anniversary. Herman was a pilot and loved flying as well as fishing, dancing and visiting with friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ivea; his parents; a sister Velma Wittrock; 2 brothers: Delbert and Edwin and one nephew, Robert Orthmann.

Herman is survived by his nieces and nephews, Ken and Beverly Orthmann of Sutherland, IA, Betty Orthmann of Peterson, IA, Barbara and Daniel Thiessen of Escondido, CA, Patricia and Robert Engel of Paullina, IA, Gary and Mary Orthmann of Sutherland, IA, Margie and Floyd Jacobs of Casselberry, FL, Bradley and Mary Orthmann of Longwood, FL, Arlys and Dave Schriener of Storm Lake, IA, Darlene and Frank Lange of San Clemente, CA; other relatives and friends.
