Robert James Orthmann, the son of Edwin and Nellie Elizabeth Troxel Orthmann, was born September 17, 1928 in Sutherland, Iowa. His childhood years were spent in Sutherland, where he received his education in country schools and later graduating from Sutherland High School. After his schooling, Bob entered the military and served with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict from January 1951 until his honorable discharge in December Of 1952. Following his military service he returned to northwest Iowa and lived in the communities of Sutherland and later Spencer, Iowa.
Robert married Betty L. Davis on March 7, 1958 in Spencer, Iowa. Following their marriage, they lived on their current farm northwest of Peterson. Bob farmed for many years in the Peterson area, until his retirement on September 17, 1990. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Peterson, American Legion Dean-Underwood Post #10 of Peterson, Lions Club and served with the C R U (Community Rescue Unit) for 22 years. He was a loving husband, great father and
grandfather.Mr. Orthmann passed away at this home north of Peterson on Sunday, January 18,2004 at the age of 75.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Nellie Orthmann. He is survived by his wife, Betty Orthmann of Peterson; two sons: Daryl and his wife, Donna Orthmann of Savage, MN and Gayl Orthmann of San Diego, CA, one daughter and her husband, Denise and Morne Milldrum of Siloam Springs, AR; four grandchildren: Shane Roder Jr., Matthew Milldrum and Megan and Madison Orthmann; his father, Edwin Orthmann of Sutherland; three brothers: Kenneth and Gary Orthmann of Sutherland and Bradley Orthmann of Longwood, FL; three sisters: Barbara Thiesen of Escondido, CA; Patricia Engel of Paullina, IA and Margie Jacobs of Casselberry, FL; other relatives and many friends.
Military services were conducted by Dean Underwood Post #10, Peterson, Iowa. Interment was in the Waterman Cemetery, Sutherland, Iowa under the direction of the Warner Funeral Home, Peterson, Iowa.
