Mary L. Hofius was born in Mercer county, Pennsylvania, on December 5, 1846. She was the oldest child of John and Maria Hofius, who were also natives of Pennsylvania. She was raised on a farm near the city of Sharon, the same farm on which her father was born and to which her grandfather came as a pioneer settler in the year of 1800.

On June 24th 1864, she was married to Andrew O. Waid, a soldier of the Civil War, who was, at that time, home on furlough after two years of service in the 150th Pennsylvania Infantry. Mr. Waid returned to service and the bride divided her time between the two parental homes, until the close of the war in August, 1865. In 1866 they made their first visit to Iowa, coming to Marshalltown by rail, and thence by stage to Eldora in Hardin county, where Mr. Waid's two older brothers lived. In June of the same year, wishing to make a leisurely trip homeward, they purchased a horse and buggy and made the journey overland, the thousand miles requiring a thirty days drive.

Mr. and Mrs. Waid remained in Pennsylvania until March, 1879, when the call of the West became too strong and they again came to Iowa, this time to remain. They settled first in Hardin county, moved to Cedar Rapids in I881, and returned in 1886 to Iowa Falls, where they made their home until December, 1892, when they moved to Goldfield. The next seventeen years were spent on a farm near that place, where Mr. Waid died on March 29th, 1909. The following November, Mrs. Waid came with Arthur and Mellie to Sutherland where she resided until her death on May 5th, 1925, at the age of 78 years and 5 months.

Mrs. Waid was the mother of seven children, two of whom died at an early age. The second daughter, Mrs. V. Reichling of Cedar Rapids, died in 1914, and the eldest, Mrs. A. A. Owens of Minneapolis, Minn., followed in 1923. Left to mourn her loss are the three children, Mrs. H. J. Warm of Calumet, and Mrs. Charles Aldred and A. D. Waid of Sutherland, eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. L. A. Belton of Gardena, California.

The deceased was highly regarded as a woman of admirable character and also above the average intellectually. It was the rule of her life to be rightly informed before reaching conclusions, which fact was repeatedly shown in the conduct of her life upon matters of importance. She had a strong sense of duty and without stint she filled full her place as a true and loving wife, mother and friend. She has always been active until her health began to fall a few years ago, which became more rapid since last fall, and since March 19th has been confined to her bed continuously.

Funeral services were held from the home here in Sutherland last Thursday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock and were attended by a large crowd of friends and neighbors. Rev. R. A. Karraker of the local Church of Christ officiated. The remains were then shipped to the old home at Goldfield for interment. Services there were held on Friday morning at 10:00 o'clock in the D. M. Stephens home, and were conducted by Rev. McCracken of the
Presbyterian church.
