MRS. SOPHIA MIELKE
Mrs. Charles Mielke, nee Sophia Dorothy Centner, was born February 26, 1860 In Mecklenburg, Germany, where she was consecrated unto the Lord in the Sacrament of Holy Baptism. At the age of 11 years she emigrated with her parents to America and lived with them on a farm near Homestead, in Iowa county, Iowa. Here she was confirmed In the Lutheran faith by one of Iowa's pioneer Lutheran pastors, Rev. H. Baumhoefner. Following her confirmation she found employment in the Amana colonies.
On March 31, 1876, the deceased was united in holy matrimony with Charles Mielke, who preceded her in death by about five years, passing away on July 14, 1929.
To this union seven children were born, five of whom are still living. They are Charles Mielke Jr. and Louis Mielke of Hartley, Mrs. Amanda Buchholz and Mrs. Hannah Benz of Melvin, and Mrs. Ida Mohr of Harris.
In the year 1887 the Mielke family came to northwest Iowa and moved to a farm in Osceola county. After 33 years of strenuous farm life, Mr. and Mrs. Mielke retired, about 15 years ago. to spend the evening of life in Hartley.
Four years ago last January, the deceased suffered a paralytic stroke, from which she never fully recovered. Last Thursday afternoon, April 19, after being bedfast for eight weeks, she passed away peacefully In the Lord.
She leaves to mourn her death her five children already mentioned, 17 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren, 1 brother-in-law, 2 sisters-in-law, and a large number of more distant relatives and friends. The funeral services were held last Sunday afternoon with Rev. A. C. Weber, pastor of the local church, in charge. Interment was made on the family lot beside her husband, in Pleasant View cemetery.
