Oliver Leroy Smith, the son of Etta Patrick and Conrad Smith, was born April 12, 1888 in Cherokee County, Iowa, and passed away while a patient in the Hartley community hospital on April 4, 1961 at the age of 72 years, 11 months and 22 days.
As a youth he attended the public schools in the community. With his parents he moved to Kansas, where they lived for nine years; returning to Calumet in 1909. In 1910 he moved to Sutherland where he operated a blacksmith and machine shop. He followed this trade for 50 years, being in business for himself in Sutherland for 34 years.
He was a councilman for Sutherland for a number of years and served on the Volunteer Fire Department for 47 years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Methodist church. Mr. Smith was active in other community activities.
On October 22, 1911, he was united in marriage to Miss Bessie Cook. To this union were born three children, two sons, Gerald Abel and Wilbur Leroy, and a daughter, Lorna.
Preceding him in death were his two sons, two sisters, two brothers and his wife, Bessie, who passed away on May 14, 1944.
On September 15, 1946, his marriage to Alma Johannsen Brookfield was solemnized.
Ol, as he was best known, was a master craftsman. He took great pride in the accomplishments of his hands. His work bore the markes of soundness and perfection. He loved the out of doors and spent many hours in pursuit of his hobbies.
Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Alma Smith, of Sutherland, Iowa; his daughter, Lorna (Mrs. Gerald Pieres,) of Des Moines, Iowa; seven grandchildren, five sisters, Mrs. Anna Booth, of Twin Falls, Idaho; Mrs. Jessie Cook, Idaho Falls, Idaho; Mrs. Flossie Allsbury, of Huntington Park, California, Mrs Ida Pandy of Twin Falls, Idaho; and Mrs. Mabel Smith, of Riverside, California. Two brothers, Max Smith, of Payette, Idaho, and Clarence Smith, of Van Nuys, California; and other relatives.
Funeral services under the direction of Baumgartens [Funeral Home] were held in the Sutherland Methodist Church, Thursday afternoon, April 6, 1961, 2 p.m. His minister, the Rev. Warren A. Biytz, was in charge. Interment was made in the Waterman Cemetery.
