Leonna V. (Jenison) Putnam (1911-1995)

Leonna V. (Jenison) Putnam, the daughter of Jole and Lula (Schmalle) Jenison, was born in Pleasant Township near Belmond, Iowa on August 30, 1911. At the age of two and a half, she moved with her parents to a farm near Sanborn, Iowa where she attended rural schools and then graduated from the Sanborn High School in 1928.

She taught in rural schools for 13 years. On June 10,1935, Leonna was united in marriage to Robert Putnam at Sioux Falls, S.D. and to this union one daughter. Jolene, was born. They joined the Hartley United Methodist Church which she served the rest of her life.

Robert and Leonna lived in Hartley for 24 years before moving to San Diego, Calif, where they resided for five years. They later moved to Borrego Springs, Calif, and lived there for 14 years. Mr. Putnam died on September 19, 1979.

Leonna became a resident of Prairie View Home at Sanborn on October 16, 1980 and she died at Baum-Harmon Hospital at Primghar, Iowa on December 22,1995, at the age of 84 years, three months and 22 days.

She is survived by her daughter: Jolene Williams of Escondido, Calif., and a grandson: Robert Williams of Fort Collins, Colo. She was preceeded in death by her parents and her husband, Robert Bruce Putnam.

Leonna had been associated with the United Methodist Church at Hartley and St. Andrews United Methodist Church of Sanborn. She had a special interest in history and genealogy and she enjoyed education and continuing to gain knowledge.

Funeral services were held December 26 at the Sanborn Funeral Home with Rev. Keith Pals officiating. Casket bearers were Leo Kuiper, Robert Knock, Brad Knock, Keith Groendyke, James W. Cravens and John Portz. Naomi Bosch and Jackie Van Ongen sang "In the Garden" and "He Touched Me." Joy Smith was accompanist/organist Burial was in Roseland Cemetery, Sanborn.
