Mrs. Emma Voss Petersen was born March 19, 1869 in Cedar County, Iowa. Here she received her education in the public schools and was married on February 22, 1891 to Detlof Petersen.
The young couple came to O'Brien County where they farmed for twenty-seven years. In the fall of 1917, they retired and moved to Hartley where they had since resided. Two daughters were born to them. Her husband preceded her in death on September 19, 1937.
Mrs. Petersen had never been seriously ill. Always able to be around and about, never bedfast with the exception of having the flu last winter. She was taken seriously ill one day and passed away Sunday night, December 19, 1943 at 9:15, at the age of 74 years and 9 months, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Al Matthiesen with whom she had been making her home for the last years.
She leaves to mourn her two daughters, Lizzie, Mrs. Al Matthiesen and Bertha, Mrs. George Swanson; 2 grandchildren, Erlaine Swanson and Delbert Matthiesen and his wife, Lois; 2 sons-in-law, Mr. Al Matthiesen and George Swanson; one sister, Mrs. Dick Hinkey; 2 brothers, Louie Voss and Ott Voss and sister-in-law, Alta Voss, all of Hartley and a sister-in-law, Meta Voss of Toronto, S. D.
Three brothers, Charlie, William and Fred preceded her in death, as well as her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Voss and step mother, Augusta Voss.
Funeral services were held, last Wednesday at the Trinity Evangelical and Reformed church, Rev. B. H. Romanowski officiating. Song selections were "There Will Be No Disappointment in Heaven", and "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere." Pallbearers were Fred Mast, Harry Petersen, Ed Kimes, Adolph Henning, Sr., Henry Osborn and George Adolph.
