Caroline Bertha Ewoldt, daughter of Hans and Henrietta Ewoldt, was born April 7, 1871, in Walcott, Scott County, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Calumet, Iowa.

On January 8, 1896, she was married to Nikolaus Jansen. They moved to O'Brien County in 1902 and settled in Grant Township near Sutherland. In 1919 they moved to Hartley where they have lived since.

For the last eleven years, Mrs. Jansen was not in good health. She died on January 4, 1950, at the age of 78 years, 8 months and 28 days.

Mr. and Mrs. Jansen were the parents of six children. One boy died in infancy and the oldest daughter, Norma Holtz, died in September, 1944.

The immediate surviving relatives are her widower, Nikolaus Jansen; four daughters: Amanda Mrs. Will Trojahn, Hartley; Mrs. Anna Popp, Moneta; Augusta, Mrs. George Baumgarn, Ocheyedan; Helen, Mrs. Otto Nagel, Hartley; sixteen grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; two sisters: Amanda Sinn, Monroe, Washington, and Alvena Thede, Davenport; and five brothers: Herman Ewoldt, Davenport, Albert Ewoldt, Davenport, August Ewoldt, Long Grove, and Charley Ewoldt, New Liberty. Three brothers preceded her in death.

Mrs. Jansen was a kind, loving mother and wife. She patiently endured her suffering and was grateful for every act of kindness shown her by her many friends. She had hoped to live until her 54th wedding anniversary, January 8, 1950.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon at 1:30 at Foley Funeral Home and 2:00 at the Methodist Church by the Rev. Raymond A. Roloff. Burial was made in Pleasant View cemetery in Hartley. Pallbearers were grandsons: Donald Baumgarn, Robert Baum­garn, Orlin Popp, Melviri Holtz, Maynard Holtz and Lawrence Klinker. Music was furnished by Mrs. Harrison Pike at the organ, and Mrs. Ray Ihry, soloist.
