Charles H. Moon, for over fifty years a resident of this community, passed away on Friday, February 18, 1921, following an illness of short duration. Funeral services were held at the home on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 and were conducted by Rev. R. L. Shroyer, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church. Interment was in Roseland cemetery.
Charles H. Moon, the son of Sanford and Sarah Ann Moon, was born on April 3, 1840, at Worcester, Mass., and the following year came with his parents to Peoria, Illinois, at which place he grew to manhood.
He enlisted at the time of the Civil war and served as a private in Company E, Eleventh Illinois Cavalry.
On October 4, 1863, he was united in marriage to Mary E. Smith. To this union were born four children, namely: Anna L., now the wife of Ira Soop, of Sanborn; George G., who died in infancy; Sadie A., who died in 1890; and Irving J., who resides at St. Joseph, Mo.
The family came to Iowa in September, 1870, and settled on a homestead near Sanborn and this place had since been his home the greater part of the time.
In October, 1909, Mr. Moon's wife passed to her reward. In November of the next year he was married to Carolina Holly, who is left to mourn his departure.
Mr. Moon was well known in the community and the large number who gathered on Sunday to pay their final respects attested lasting friendships. Another of that army which half a century ago was in the prime of manhood has departed and it wjll be but a short time until the army will be but a memory.
Those from out of town who were in attendance at the funeral were: Mrs. Rene Taylor, Galchutt, N. Dak , S. T. Huber, Sioux City, Mr. and Mrs. Theo. Huber, Bristol, S. Dak., Ed. L Huber, Lynch, Nebr., Mr. and Mrs. I. J. Moon, St. Joseph, Mo., Fred Moon and Mrs. Blanche Moyer, Peoria, Ill., L. Wheeler, Draper, S. Dak.
