Marcus. Iowa - Clara Wankum 93, of Marcus died Saturday, February 20, 1999 at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars. Services will be at 1030 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Remsen Rev. Craig Miller will officiate and burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery at Cherokee. Visitation began at 2:00 p.m on Monday with a prayer service at 7.00 p.m. at the Earnest and Roethler Funeral Chapter in Marcus.
Clara Ann Hansen was born on June 5, 1905 near Paullina, Iowa. She was the daughter of Hans P. and Mary (Rehder) Hansen. She attended rural school.
She married Urban Wankum on May 4, 1941 at Marcus. She had worked as a beautician in Paullina and Storm Lake before her marriage. She worked at Aalfs Manufacturing in Le Mars and did sewing for many people while living in Marcus.
She enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing, crocheting, tatting, embroidering and reading. She has been a resident of Heartland Care Center in Marcus since February of 1996. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Remsen for over fifty years and a member of the ladies aide. She had served as Sunday School Sec-Treasurer for over twenty-five years. Survivors include a daughter and her husband Jean and Marion Sohl of Cleveland, Texas, a son and his wife, John and Linda Wankum of Garden City, Kansas; four grandchildren, Phil and his wife Nikki Wankum, Carla Wankum, Melanie and her husband John Harrison; Chris Sohl and two great grandchildren. Lauren and Christina Wankum; and a brother-in-law, Clarence Riedemann of Milaca, Minn, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by five brothers and five sisters and a grandson.
