Son of Henry Orthman a Victim of Lockjaw
Wound on Foot from a Plum Thorn

A sad and sudden death occurred at the Henry Orthmann home in Grant township, four and a half miles north of Sutherland, early Sunday morning. Delbert, the 9 year old son of the family, died with lock jaw, as a result of an lnjurv to his foot sustained nearly two weeks before.

One day week before last the boy stepped on a thorn from a plum tree. It ran into his foot near his large toe. Little was thought of the injury at the time and it soon healed up and gave no more trouble until last Friday.

On that day the lad complained of not being able to open his month, but he was still playing with other children. In the afternoon his parents took him to the Hand hospital at Hartley. Dr. Hand was not at home but another doctor treated him.

He went home with his parents that night and next morning both doctors came to see him, but it was too late to do good. The child grew rapidly worse and his jaws were soon very firmly locked, although he was able to talk some until the very last. Finally convulsions came and the little life went out, in terrible agony.

The funeral was held at the Presbyterian church in Paullina Tuesday afternoon at 1 o'clock, Rev. Turner, of Cleghorn being in chorge. Burial was in Prairie View cemetery.

The deceased boy's father is a brother of Ganus Orthmann, near here There are three other children, but the death of this little boy is of the saddest and full sympathy is extended the parents.
