George Wendell Romey (1909-1973)

George Wendell Romey, the son of Edwin and Etta Marten Romey, was born at Sibley, Iowa September 9, 1909. He lived in Sibley and was educated there, until his last year of High School when he went to Harrison, Arkansas, where he graduated and then learned printing as a trade. During the depression he returned to Sibley where he was employed in the CCC.

He was united in marriage on May 13, 1939 to Lenore McSheehy at Lake View, Iowa. The couple lived for a year in Peterson where he was employed as a printer and then came to Hartley where for the last 33 years he had been employed by the Hartley Sentinel and currently was production superintendent.

He served in the Army during World War II, was a member of Beacon Lodge No. 495 AF and AM of Hartley and was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ of Hartley.

He was stricken while at work on May 29, and was hospitalized where he passed away on June 1, 1973 at the age of 63.

Preceding him in death were his parents and one sister, Frieda Johnson. Left to cherish his memory are his wife; four daughters; Mary Jo Orzeck of Houston, Texas; Mrs. Robert (Marsha) Lindgren of Hartley, Mrs. Larry (Karen) Feddersen of Anchorage, Alaska and Wendy at home; three grandchildren, one brother Merle of Clinton, Iowa and many other relatives and friends.

For the 34 years, of their married life together, Wendell was a devoted husband and father. He took delight in growing things and enjoyed all outdoors, especially his roses and garden. In his work he was faithful and dedicated. His family, had the benefit of a wonderful man for many years and will always cherish his memory.

Services in memory of Wendell Romey were held at the Trinity United Church of Christ in Hartley, Iowa on Tuesday, June 5, 1973 at 3 p.m. Rev. Bernard Sayler was the officiating clergyman. The casket attendants were W. R. Vezina, Jr., Raymond Riessen, Merlyn Welch, Ed Robinson, Clarence Olhausen, and Don Robinson. Burial was made at the Pleasant View Cemetery, Hartley. Iowa with Flag Presentation by American Legion Post No. 288. The Baumgarten Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
