Raymond W. Sierk (1915-1991)

Raymond W. Sierk, son of William and Emma Snyder Sierk, was born June 10, 1915 at Dakota County, Nebraska. He received his schooling in Woodbury County School #3 and the Sioux City Public Schools. He was baptized and confirmed at Christ Lutheran Church at Creighton, Nebraska. He spent some time in the C.C.C. Camps and was employed at Armour Packing Co. and Mayhew and McCoy Truck Gardening Farms.

He was united in marriage to Lucille Krohn on August 27, 1942 at Dakota City, Nebraska. He served in the United States Army during World War II, from August of 1942 until February of 1945 and was stationed in camps in California, Texas, Kentucky and overseas at Yokahama and Tokyo, Japan, entering Japan via Yokahama Bay a few days before the peace treaty was signed. After his military service, they made their home in Woodbury County.

Ray and Lucille moved to Gaza, Iowa in 1961 and Ray worked for twelve years as greenhouse operator at the Cherokee Mental Health Institute and then went into masonry work until his retirement. He enjoyed gardening and dancing and will be remembered for his graceful steps on the ballroom floor. He passed away at Sioux City on September 16, 1991 at the age of 76.

Preceding him in death were his parents, four brothers, Walter, Clarence, Arnold & Joe, and one sister, Gladys.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Lucille; one daughter and her husband. Donna Rae & Tim Gilbert of Minneapolis, Minnesota; two sons and their wives, Damon & Carole of Sioux City, Iowa; and Dennis & Kathy of Salt Lake City, Utah; four grandchildren, Christine, Jonathan and Matthew Gilbert of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Eve Sierk of Westminster, California; three step-grandchildren, Eileen, James and Joseph Duffy of Salt Lake City; one sister, Mrs. Louis (Edna) DeRoin of South Sioux City, Nebraska; one brother, Carl, of Arlington, West Virginia; two half-brothers, Laurence Greiper of Minota, Illinois and Donnie Greiner of Thayne, Wyoming; as well as other relatives and friends.

Memorial services were held Wednesday, September 16, 1991 ai 2:00 p.m. at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Sutherland for Raymond W. Sierk. Reverend Leroy Riemer officiated. Honorary attendants were Butch Edwards, Rodney Johannsen, Gordon Hill, Norman Rath, Craig Struve, and Marvin Solko. Baumgarten Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
