James Roscoe Gentry (1910-1991)

James Roscoe Gentry, the son of Frederick Nelson and Florence Myrtle Short Gentry, was born January 12, 1910 at Winterset, Iowa. He graduated from high school at Alexandria, SD and then attended the University of South Dakota at Vermillion receiving his BS in Education and a Masters Degree in Music. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was united in marriage to Mildred Strang at Arnolds Park in 1941 and began his career as an Instrumental Music Instructor in the high school there. During his military service, the family was stationed at the Army Air Base in Laredo, Texas. He then taught music in the high schools at Elkader, Sutherland, Spirit Lake and at Garrigan in Algona, retiring in 1976.

He and Mildred moved to Spencer in 1976 and he began his retirement job, serving as Court Attendant for uV District Court of Clay County for fifteen years. IHe was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Spencer.

He passed away at Spencer on Sept. 10, 1991 at the age of 81. Preceding him in death were his parents and one son, James Meredith Gentry in 1981.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Mildred; two sons and their wives, Stephen and B'Ann of Lake Park, Mark and Gretchen of Arvada, Co; one daughter and her husband, Margaret and Harold Sunde of Estherville; one daughter-in-law, Jill Gentry of Elgin, Illinois; twelve grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Sat., Sept. 14 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Spencer for James R. Gentry. Committal service was held at Lone Tree Cemetery, Everly, Iowa with Baumgarten Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
