O'Brien County Pioneer Dies in Wisconsin

Mrs. Hazlett Wilson, a pioneer of O'Brien county, passed away at the home of her son, Vance Hannon [sic] at Livingston, Wisc. Oct. 20.

Cecelia Melissia Stevens, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mathias Stevens, was born January 20, 1850 in Milflin township, Iowa county, Wisconsin and passed away Oct. 20, 1932 at the ags of S2 years and 9 months. She is the last of a family of ten children.

She grew to womanhood in the place of her birth. Her mother was injured in an accident which made her an invalid and Cecelia tenderly cared for her during those years.

On February 12, 1872 she was married to Marquis Hannan. He had formerly come to this section of Iowa and took up some government land as he was a soldier in the Civil war. She and her husband came direct to O'Brien county after their marriage in 1872.

In a little book telling the story of her life she tells of the hardships and privations of these pioneer days and also tells of the jolly good times they had. At first they lived in a sod house and Cherokee was their trading point. They were regular attendants at the church services held in the schoolhouse in those earlier days. In time they built up a substantial farm place with a good house and beautiful grove.

To this union there were born seven children, two daughters and five sons: Elizabeth Ann, Mrs. Herman Albert who passed away in 1901; Mary Jane, Mrs. Henry Albert, who passed away in 1896; William Henry who lost his life in the Spanish American War in 189S; Vance M. of Livingston, Wise; Daniel J. of Lismore, Minn.; Delbert O. of Usk, Washington and Frank J. of Oral, S. D. There are also 14 grandchildren and five great giandchildren.

On Oct. 10, 1896 the husband died and was buried in the Primghar cemetery. Two years later she moved to Primghar to live. In 1899 she was married to Hazlett Wilson and in 1900 they moved to Hartford, S. D. and lived there until 1910 when they moved to the Black Hills locating at Oral, S. D. which meant more pioneering. Mr. Wilson passed away in 1926.

Since May, 1929 she has made her home at the South Dakota State Soldiers Home at Hot Springs. She was baptized as a child at the old Rock church near Livingston, Wisc, and early joined the Methodist Episcopal church. During her long life she was always interested in the cause of prohibition and in the Methodist hospital at Rapid City. Early in August this year she came east which proved to be her last earthly visit with relatives and friends. After completing her visit in Minnesota and Iowa she went to Wisconsin to spend sometime with her son Vance. On Oct. 10 she suffered a stroke of paralysis and in 10 days passed to her heavenly home.

After special services at the M. E. church in Livingston, Wisc, the remains were brought to Primghar where funeral services were held in the M .E. church and burial was made at Pleasant View cemetery [sic]. Those from Hartley attending the services were Mr. and Mrs. Herman Albert and children, Howard and Lois, Mrs Bertha Brown and Mrs. Amos Lloyd.
