Dick "Doeke" Prins (1927-2013)

DICK PRIN8 1927 - 2013

Doeke Prins, the son of Pier and Delijaantje (Attema) Prins, was born on February 24, 1927 in the Netherlands. He lived his early years in the Netherlands on the family farm, living there during the World War II years. When he came to America in July of 1948, he changed his name to Dick and made his home with George and Nettie Smit and their sons, Dave and Don of Hospers, IA.

On November 26, 1954, Dick was united in marriage to Cora Visser at the First Christian Reformed Church in Rock Valley, IA. The couple was blessed with nine children: Diane, Dwayne, Wilma, Roger, Janet, Ronald, Arlin, Kathryn and Bradley.

Following their marriage, the couple fanned for ten years in the Baltic and Colton, SD areas. In 1965, they moved to a farm south of Hartley, IA and resided there until 1993 when they retired and moved into the town of Hartley. Dick served as an elder at the Hartley church, as well as deacon at the church in Colton, SD. In April 2008, they moved to Sanborn, IA. He moved to Prairie View on August 30, 2013 where he passed away on September 13, 2013 at the age of 86 years, 6 months, 19 days.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Cora of Sanborn; his children: Diane Stukey and Steve Titterington of Milford, IA, Dwayne and Mary Prins of Canon City, CO, Wilma and John Feeley of Fort Collins, CO, Roger and Donna Prins of Loveland, CO, Janet and Jerry Brady of Marcus, IA, Ronald and Nanette Prins of Loveland, CO, Arlin and Janet Prins of Hartley, IA, Kath­ryn and Calvin Van Der Zwaag of Hull, IA, Bradley Prins of Grandville, MI; 21 grandchildren, 2 great­grandchildren, 2 sisters: Riem Van Wieren and Reka Kingma; 2 brothers and their wives: Thys and Ekke Prins, and John and Betty Prins of the Netherlands; 2 sisters-in-law: Akke Rietsma of the Netherlands, and Theresa Prins of B.C. Canada.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 3 brothers: Reinder and his wife, Tina Prins of the Netherlands, August and his first wife, Beatrice of B.C. Canada, and Sjirk Prins of the Netherlands; 2 brothers-in-law: Lucas Van Wieren and Cornelius Kingma of the Netherlands; grand­daughter, Valerie Prins; and son-in-law, Gaylen Stukey.

Funeral services were held September 16 at the Christian Reformed Church in Sanborn. Officiating were Rev. Dave Smit, Rev. Al Van Dellen and Rev LeRoy Christoffels. Pallbearers were Chad Prins, Edward Doeke Feeley, Devin Prins, Brandon Brady, Jay Prins and Tyler Van Der Zwaag. Thelma Elgersma, organist, and Starla Reitsma, pianist, accompanied the congregation singing "How Great Thou Art," "Precious Lord, Take My . Hand," "As the Hart, About to Falter," "Ancient Words," "Amazing Grace" and the "Hallelujah Chorus." Burial was in Roseland Cemetery of Sanborn with the Sanborn Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
