Wayne Steinbeck

Wayne Leroy Steinbeck, the son of John and Myrtle Williams Steinbeck, was born January 16, 1920, in Hartley, Iowa. He attended the public schools there and graduated from Hartley High School.

He entered military service January 20, 1942, at Fort Des Moines, Iowa, and served in the United States Army Air Corps for three years. He served in the following battles and campaigns: Naples Foggia. Air Off Europe, Tunisian, Sicilian, Rome-Arno. Air Combat Balkans. He distinguished himself, receiving six Bronze Stars. He received his Discharge as Cpl. on September 23, 1945, at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri.

He married Reva Huston on November 1, 1951, in the Little Brown Church at Nashua, Iowa. They farmed near Hartley for many years. Most of his life was spent in the Hartley area, although he also lived in Arizona and Spencer. He retired in 1986. For the past 2 1 /2 months he had resided at the Mann Wing in Hartley.

He was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ in Hartley. He belonged to the Eagles Lodge and the Moose, both at Spencer, and to the American Legion Post at Hartley. He was an avid gardener, as well as an ardent fisherman. He also enjoyed working with wood.

He was preceded in death by his parents: his wife, Reva in 1974: and two brothers. Leland and Donald Steinbeck.

Left to cherish his memory are his children and their spouses: Maureen and Lon Vogt of Hartley. Marilynn and Lynn Horstmann of Sutherland, Maria of Somerville, Massachusetts, and Marsha and Rod Jenkins of Clairton. Pennsylvania: four grandsons: James. Mark and Kyle Vogt. and Nathan Jenkins: two sisters, two brothers and their spouses: Evelyn and Vernon Kruse of Sutherland. Elaine and Gordon Struve of Rossie. Garland and Ann Steinbeck and Keith and Donna Steinbeck of Hartley; a sister-in-law, Jean Steinbeck of Royal; a special friend. Loraine Raveling of Spencer: as well as numerous nieces and nephews, and his many friends.

Funeral services in memory of Wayne Steinbeck were conducted at 10:30 a.m. Monday. October 19, 1992, at Trinity United Church of Christ in Hartley. Rev. Stokes Snyder officiated. Casket bearers were Bob Mauer. Dale Halquist. Chris Woodall, Dutch Marxen, Bill Burgeson and Arnold Pahl. Honorary bearers were Warren Jenkins. Francis Glacken, Harry Nielsen, Harvey Anderson, Paul Petersen. Donald Petersen, Eldon Dahlgren and Darrel Brotherton. Military services were conducted by Arthur Kirchhoff Post #288. American Legion of Hartley. Committal service was in Pleasant View Cemetery in Hartley. Baumgarten Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
