Anna (Merkord) Steinbeck (1875-1959)

Anna Steinbeck

Funeral services for Mrs. Anna Steinbeck were held Monday at two o'clock in Trinity United Churchof Christ. Past R.G. Beck who officiated also conducted private services for the family at eleven in the morning.

Mrs. Anna Steinbeck was born in Leidenburg, Germany, near Hanover, on November 11, 1865, the child of John H. Mercord and Minna Kulenkamp. She was baptized in the Evangelical Church of Germany on December 3, 1965. In 1889, she was confirmed in the State Church of Prussia.

She was married to William Henry Steinbeck on May 13, 1887. The couple was blessed with 7 children, three of which died in infancy. The couple lived in Plattville, Wisconsin for a few months, after which they moved near Sutherland, O'Brien County where they spent the remainder of their active days.

They retired from the farm in 1916, living in Hartley where Mr. Steinbeck died on July 26. Mrs. Steinbeck suffered a stroke eleven years ago after which her health continuted to fail. She spent the last years in the McCroskey Home where she received and enjoyed excellent care. She passed away Friday, July 17, 1958.

Mrs. Steinbeck was a member of First United Church from the time she moved into this area. She also was a member of the Ladies Aid of the church. She rejoiced in her church and served it faithfully.

She was a good mother and fine home-maker. Her children remember her as a hard working mother who provided an excellent home and fine parental atmosphere. Her friends and neighbors will always remember her for her gracious hospitality and continued kindness.

A son, Alfred, preceded her in death in 1931. She is survived by a son, John, of Sutherland, and two daughters, Mrs. Marie VandeMark of Hartley and Mrs. Laura Westphal of Hartley.

The interment took place at Pleasant View Cemetery [sic].

NOTE: Both Mr. and Mrs. Steinbeck are buried at Roseland Cemetery in Sanborn. Their daughter Caroline shares the family plot. -ja
