Lawrence Lester Tewes (1917-1973)

Lawrence Tewes, 55, rural Sutherland, died at the Hartley Hospital Saturday of injuries suffered in a farm accident. George Sleeper, O'Brien County sheriff, reported that Mr. Tewes was working with a tractor and manure spreader on his farm Saturday afternoon when he became entangled in the beaters of the manure spreader. Mr. Tewes was discovered by his daughters about 7 p.m. when he failed to return to his home. The daughters freed him from the spreader and he was taken to the Hartley Hospital where he died.

Funeral services were at ten thirty a.m. Tuesday at. Bethel Lutheran. Church in Sutherland with Rev. Leroy. Riemer officiating. Burial was in Pleasant View Cemetery at Hartley under the direction of the Baumgarten Funeral Home of Hartley.

Mr. Tewes was born Oct. 20, 1917 in Clay County. He was a lifelong northwest Iowa resident and a veteran of World War II. He married Arlene Struve Dec. 31, 1947 at Hartley. Mr. Tewes was employed in farming.

Survivors, include the widow, two sons, Lester of Paullina and Loren at home; four daughters, Mrs. Leonard (Mavis) Schoenrock of Hawarden, and Maxine, Marilyn and Marsha, all at home; a grandchild; eight brothers, Harlan, Marvin, Lester, and Eldon, all of Hartley, Delmar of Royal, Orville of Paullina, Roger of Larrabee, and Arlo of Primghar; and five sisters, Mrs. John (Arlene) Harders, Mrs. Eldon (Marjorie) Petersen, Mrs. Darrell (Mildred) Henning and Mrs. Harold (Marlene) Wills, all of Hartley, and Mrs. Marlin (Norma Jean) Richter of Granville.
