John Joseph Tewes, Jr. was born December 29, 1892 at Wheatland, Iowa, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Tewes, Sr. At the age of three years, the family moved to the Hartley community where he spent the rest of his life, except for the time served in the U. S. Army.

He entered service June 25, 1918 at Primghar and was con nected with Company "G", 350th Army Infantry until his discharge on March 8, 1919. The last four years he spent at the Veterans Hospital in Knoxville.

He received his education in the rural schools near Hartley, His lifetime occupation was farming and he pursued this work as long as his health permitted.

He departed this life in the Veterans Hospital at Knoxville Friday, Sept. 24th.

Preceding him in death were his parents, one sister and one brother. He is survived by his sister, Mrs. Emma Peters, nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Last rites were held from Trinity United Church of Christ on Monday, Sept. 27, Rev. R. G. Beck officiating. Mrs. Lambert Mastbergen and Jake Moermond sang "Lead Kindly Light" and "Take Thou My Hand and Lead Me." Pallbearers were August Brand, Richard Peterson, L e 1 a n d Pohlman, L. G. Newel, Leland Bruegmann and Wm, Bumann. Military services were conducted at Pleasant View Cemetery by Arthur W. Kirchhoff Post 288, Robert Linder commander. Color bearers were Wayne Tibbetts and Darold Rost; color guards, Donald Treimer and George Drelle firing squad commander, Melvin Holtz and buglers, Ronnie Zegers and David Sleeper. Presentation of the American Flag was made by chaplain Paul Hunt.
