John Tewes, born in Zora, Germany, August 18, 1857, came to America as a young man and settled for the first time in Scott Co., Iowa. After some years he came to Clinton county; he joined in wedlock with Anita [sic Annia] Asmus in 1887.

Twenty-five years ago the family came to O'Brien county where they were thrifty tillers of the soil. Seven years ago Mr. and Mrs. Tewes retired to Hartley, largely on account of the illness of the former. On Tuesday of last week Mr. Tewes condition took a turn for the worse. On Thursday morning at 9:00 he departed this life having attained the age of 65 years, 6 months and 2 days. Deceased is survived by his wife. Mrs. Anita [sic Annia] Tewes, four children, Mrs. Tillie Peters, Mr. Ernest Tewes, Mrs. John Peters and Mr. John Tewes, and seven grandchildren and host of friends.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon from the home of the deceased. The mortal remains were buried in the local cemetery.
