Mrs. Annine Wiebke Tewes, one of the pioneer mothers of Iowa, passed away on Tuesday night at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Emma Peters at her farm southeast of Hartley.

Mrs. Tewes was the oldest of ten children born to Mr. Peter Asmus and his wife Margaret, nee Sommer. She was born on the 14th day of June, 1864 at Hollingstedt in Germany. She was baptized in infancy and later confirmed at the Evangelical church of her home town.

At the age of 20 years she emigrated and came to California, where she resided for one year, after which she came to Clinton county, Iowa. There she was married at Wheatland in 1887 to Mr. John H. Tewes. For 9 years they made their home on a farm in Clinton county, and in 1896 they moved to a farm north of Hartley, where they lived for 20 years, retiring in 1914, and making their home in Hartley.

Mr. Tewes preceded his wire in death in April, 1922.

Eight years ago Mrs. Tewes revisited the land of her birth, where she stayed for six months. About 7 years ago her health began to fail, and for the past 5 years she has made her home alternately with her daughters, Mrs, Tillie Peters and Mrs. Emma Peters, where she received the best of nursing and the kindest of care. For the past 8 months she has stayed with her daughter, Emma, at whose home she died. The last years of her life were full of suffering and sorrow as she became gradually more and more helpless. For the past 29 weeks she has been confined to her bed, and finally, after all that medical science could do, had failed, she passed away quietly on Tuesday, July 18th, at the age of 69 years, 1 month and 4 days.

Mrs. Tewes will be numbered among those pioneers whose industry and thrift helped to build this great state. She is survived by four children, Mrs. Tillie Peters, Mr. Ernest Tewes, Mrs. Emma Peters and Mr. John Tewes, all of the vicinity of Hartley; four sisters and one brother in Germany; two sisters, Mrs. Mathilde Muhl of Wheatland, Iowa and Mrs. Hans Ahrenstorf of Hartley and thirteen grandchildren; also one daughter-in-law, several brothers-in-law, and many more distant relatives and friends.

A source of great grief in Mrs. Tewes' late years were the untimely and sudden deaths of her two sons-in-law, Mr. Leonard and Mr. John Peters.

Funeral services will be conducted at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Emma Peters, on Friday afternoon at 1.30 and at 2 o'clock at Trinity church. A mixed quartet will sing several selections and her pastor, the Rev F. W. Budy, will officiate.
