Ernest Tewes, son of Mr. and Mrs. Johannes Tewes, was born in Wheatland, Iowa, on April 21, 1889. [In] 1895, his parents moved to Hartley where they farmed. After completing the eighth grade, Ernest took one years work at a Mechanical school in Kansas City.

In 1915, he was united in marriage to Miss Nellie Baumeister of Hartley. To this union 15 children, 9 sons and 6 daughters, were born. One child, Marilyn, [sic] preceded him in death in 1934 in her infancy.

He was taken to the hospital on August 3 and departed this life on Tuesday morning, August 10, at 13:30 o'clock at the age of 54 years, 3 months and 20 days.

Ernest is survived by his widow, Nellie W Tewes, and 14 children: Harlan, Lawrence in the army in Louisiana, Marvin in the Air Corps at Manhatten, Kans., Arline, Delmar, Lester, Margery, Orville, Mildred, Norma Jean, Roger, Arlo, Marlene and Eldon; two grandchildren; two sisters, Emma Peters and Tillie Peters; one brother, John Tewes and a host of relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Thursday from the Trinity Evangelical and Reformed Church, Rev. B.H. Romanowski officiating. Pallbearers were Ewold Bethke, Peter Brower, Garret Brower, Henry Rinken, Arthur Denny and Fred Winkelhouse.
