Josiah Libby was born, October 16, 1827, at Chesterville, Maine, and passed from this life, January 14, 1800 at 4:30 p.m., at his home in Sanborn, Iowa, of old age.

In 1942 he went with his parents to Mercer county, Illinois, the journey being made overland in a wagon, that being the customary mode of traveling and was wroguth with many hardships, as they made their way through unbroken forests, treacherous streams and the exposture of wind and eather, and continuing over a period of 71 days, at which time they reached the place which was to be their home until 1864, when they removed to Benton county, Iowa.

May 27, 1852, he was united in marriage with Susannah Pollack, in Mercer, Illinois. In 1881, he purchased land near Sanborn, settling on same the following year and has since resided in and near Sanborn, settling on same the following year and has since resided in and near Sanborn, until the final summons came.

To Mr. and Mrs. Libby were born four sons and two daughters, all of who, with his wife, survive him.

Mr. Libby was a man of learning and sound judgement and in the early pioneer days was sought out as an authority on all subjects. In early life, Mr. Libby identified himself with the Presbyterian church, and during all his long life, until within the past few yeas when time and ill health fell with a heavy hand upon him, was an active worker in the church of his choice. For twenty years he was superintendent and teacher in Sunday school in Benton county.

Thus another early settler, one whose home has been in our midst for twenty-seven years, has answered the call to join that innumerable throng on the shores of eternity. Funeral services were held at the late home Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev. C.G. Butler of the Presbyterian church, assisted by the choir. Many and beautiful were the floral offerings brought by loving friends of the departed.

His familiar face and form will be seen no more among us. But the memory of his upright conduct and his neighborly kindness will remain as a legacy to his surviving relatives and friends.

Interment was made at Roseland Cemetery.
