Services held for John Spang
Funeral services for John Spang were held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, May 25, 2001, at the First Presbyterian Church in Paullina, Iowa, with Rev Karl Eckhoff officiating. "On Eagles Wings" and "Amazing Grace" were sung by Marj Felt-man. "How Great Thou Art" was sung by the congregation. The organist was Kay Grosvenor. The honorary casket bearers were Vance Van Buskirk, Glen Jacobs, Jim Gallea, Dale Schuldt, Carl Akeson and Bruce Rome. The casket bearers were Kevin Spang, Dick Fechter, Wally Simm, David Jochims, Jerry Saunders and Bill Simm. Military graveside services were conducted by Russell West Post #95 of the American Legion of Paullina. Interment was at the Pleasant View Cemetery at Hartley, Iowa, under the direction of the Gaudian-Eldridge Funeral Home.
John Spang, the son of Lloyd and Mae Gallea Spang, was born December 14, 1915, in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota. He moved with his family to the Moneta, Iowa, area where he received his education, graduating from Moneta High School. He worked in Spencer, Iowa, for 1 year and later Los Angeles for 2 years before farming in the Moneta, Iowa, area in 1939. On April 2, 1942, he entered the U.S. Navy, serving during W.W. II before being honorably discharged on December 14, 1945.
On Dec. 11, 1947, he was united in marriage to Margaret Schuldt in Eagle Grove, Iowa. After their marriage the couple farmed in the Hartley, Primghar and Sutherland area for 12 years. They moved into Paullina in 1959 where he spent 24 years in the livestock feed business and later worked for the Veterans Affairs Commission and in 1990 was appointed Veterans Affairs Executive Director for O'Bnen County, retinng in 1998.
His wife preceded him in death on October 20, 1997, in Primghar.
John passed away on Tuesday, May 22, 2001, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota, reaching the age of 85 years, 5 months and 8 days.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Paullina, lifetime member of American Legion Post #95 of Paullina where he had held several offices He was manager of the Legion for various activities and served as the Legion's Boys State coordinator and active in 40 & 8 He was a member of the V.F.W. and the Paullina Lions Club, where he had served m vanous offices and was active and in Boy Scouts.
John is survived by one son and his wife, Jon L. and Linda Spang of Mound, MN; two daughters and their husbands: Mari Spang Wall and Keith Wall and Julie and Ralph Aufdenkamp, all of Paullina, five grandchildren- Jonathan and Suzanne Spang and her fiance Jason Zattler, Tyler Spang and Shelby and Rustin Aufdenkamp; three step-grandchildren: Ira and Marcy Wall, Everett and Teresa Wall and Bart Wall; step great-grandchild, Brady Wall, two sisters: Margaret and her husband, Blaine Klingsporn of Worthington, Minnesota, and Ruth Wells of Minneapolis, Minnesota; a special nephew, Steve Spang of Prior Lake, Minnesota, and a very special friend, Evelyn Drennen of Warrenton, Virginia; also a host of other relatives and fnends.
He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; brother, Ernie; and infant sister, Audrey Jean.
