Wesley Niebuhr, 77, of Paullina passed away Saturday, Aug. 16, 2003, at the Orange City Municipal Hospital Long Term Care Facility in Orange City, Iowa.
Services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Zion Lutheran Church in Paullina, with the Rev. Karl Eckhoff officiating. Burial will be in Prairie View Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., at Gaudian-Eldridge Funeral Home in Paullina.
Wesley Walter Niebuhr, the son of Walter and Irene (Fiddelke) Niebuhr, was born May 19, 1926, on the family farm in Caledonia Township, O'Brien County, Paullina. He was baptized on June 6, 1926, at St. John Lutheran Church in Germantown, Iowa. He attended country school and Zion Lutheran School in Paullina. He was confirmed on May 24, 1942, and assisted his parents in farming.
He was united in marriage to LaVerne C. Meyer on Jan. 6, 1946, at St. John Lutheran Church. They started farming four miles west and one-fourth mile south of Paullina. They retired on the farm in the fall of 1989. They moved into Paullina in the summer of 1996.
His passions in life were his family, farming, friends, dancing, playing cards and traveling with LaVerne. He loved to have the grandchildren come to the farm and give them tractor rides and farm with Grandpa.
He was a lifetime member of Zion Lutheran Church and served as trustee.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, LaVerne; two sons and their wives, David and Leann of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Larry and Elaine of Canton, S.D.; a daughter and her husband, Linda and Daniel Mickalowski of Sioux Falls; a son-in-law and his wife, Richard and Jan Fonder of Sioux Falls; nine grandchildren, Abbey Courtland and Lauren Niebuhr, both of Sioux Falls, Eric Cops of Denver, Colo., Corey Niebuhr of Sioux Falls, Todd and Kyle Mickalowski of Sioux Falls, Michelle and her husband, Andrew Houglum of Mesa, Ariz., and Matthew Fonder of Vermillion, S.D.; two sisters, Sylvia Unrau and Marcella Ewoldt, both of Paullina; a brother-in-law, Tom Drake of Algona, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Diane Fonder; and a sister, Phyllis Drake.
