David Wesley Niebuhr, son of Wesley and LaVerne (Meyer) Niebuhr, was born August 7, 1946 in Paullina, IA. He spent his childhood in the Paullina area and graduated from Paullina High School in 1964. After graduation he enlisted in the United States Army and was honorably discharged on March 2, 1969. After living and working in OK, David settled in Sioux Falls where he worked for the John Morrell Company.

He married Leann Mekvold on September, 12, 1981 in Renner, SD. In 1987 David began working in car sales at Ted Tufty Dodge and Billions and then as a fleet manager for Lithia Dodge and Billions.

In his free time, David could be found landscaping and working on his yard. He also enjoyed boating with family and friends at Lewis and Clark Lake in Yankton, SD. Above all, David loved his family. He was a loving husband, father, son and a caring brother and a friend to all those who knew him. Throughout his battle with cancer, David’s vibrant personality and positive attitude have been true inspirations to those around him. He will be greatly missed and forever loved.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Lea Niebuhr, Sioux Falls; children, Eric Cops, Denver, CO, and Abbey, Courtland and Lauren Niebuhr, all of Sioux Falls; mother, LaVerne Niebuhr, Paullina, IA; brother, Larry (Elaine) Niebuhr, Canton, SD; sister, Linda (Dan) Mickalowski, Sioux Falls; brother-in-law, Richard (Jan) Fonder, Sioux Falls; and a host of other relatives and friends.

David is preceded in death by his father, Wesley; his sister, Diane Fonder and his father-in-law, Bennett Mekvold.

David’s family requests that memorials be directed to the American Cancer Society or the Messiah New Hope Lutheran Church building fund.
