Luella Strampe (1918-2008)

Luella Strampe, the daughter of William and Mary (Wagoner) Stange was born October 16, 1918 near Boyden, Iowa. In her childhood she lived on farms in both Sioux and Lyon counties, where she received her education. She finished the 8th grade in Lyon County and then stayed home to help her parents.

In 1939, she was united in marriage to Walter Tiedemann at St. Paul Lutheran Church near Hull. After their marriage the couple farmed north of Hull until his death in 1950. After his death she moved to Sioux City, where she attended Ellis School of Beauty. She owned and operated a beauty shop in South Sioux City, Nebraska.

She was united in marriage to Orlynn Strampe on March 12, 1954 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in rural Hull. After their marriage the couple moved to the Strampe family farm by Germantown, where they farmed for many years. She was an excellent farm wife and raised chickens, gardened, cooked, kept a spotless house, quilted and sewed clothes for her young family.

The couple retired to Paullina and continued to farm until his death on August 10, 1998 in Paullina. She remained in Paullina until moving to the Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull in 2007. Luella passed away at the Sioux Center Community Hospital in Sioux Center, Iowa on Sunday, October 5, 2008, reaching the age of 89 years, 11 months and 19 days. She had been busy planning for her 90th birthday.

She was baptized on November 24, 1918 and later confirmed on April 9, 1933 at St. Paul Lutheran Church near Hull. She was currently a member of the St. John Lutheran Church in Germantown and the Ladies Aid of the church. Luella had a strong faith. She played the organ for over 30 years and taught Sunday school for 40 years. Luella had rheumatoid arthritis and had to quit playing the organ, piano, quilting and sewing, but she still loved life and had a positive outlook. She never complained or wanted to inconvenience anyone. She enjoyed playing cards, scrabble, crosswords puzzles and bingo was her favorite and she enjoyed playing it at the Spencer Fair.

Luella is survived by one son, Wayne Strampe and Darla Hohbach of Germantown and daughter, Jeanette and Doyle Wissink of Hull; nine grandchildren, Amber and husband, Bob; Justin, Joshua, Amber, Katie, Jesica, April, Catlin and Shaina; two great-grandchildren, Malana and Faith; one brother, Lyle Stange of Hull and five sisters-in-law, Lorie Thompson and Dorothy McCormack both of Rock Rapids; Lorine Tiedemann of George; Margaret Tiedemann of Sheldon and Verla Hibbing of Paullina; also other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, her parents, one brother, Edward and his wife, Frances Stange and a sister-in-law, Eileen Stange.
