Elwood Schulz (1914-1994)

Elwood Rederick Schulz was born March 16, 1914, to Fred and Agnes (Straub) Schulz on the family farm outside of Germantown, Iowa. He attended grade school a mile away from his home, entered sixth grade at St. John Parochial School at Germantown and entered high school in Paullina in 1926 at the age of 12. Elwood was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Paullina in 1927.

After graduating from Concordia Junior College in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1933, he went on to attend Concordia Seminary from 1934 to 1935. Elwood received a B.A.degree with a minor in English from the University in Iowa City in 1939.

He married Juanita Frances Porter on April 3, 1941, and two months later earned his Degree in Law from Cumberland University in Tennessee.

Elwood practiced law for approximately nine years, returning to Iowa in 1950, where he assumed sole operation of the family farm. After retiring from farming in 1975, he was ordained as a lay minister in West Jefferson, North Carolina.

After returning to Hartley, Iowa, he served as O'Brien County Magistrate for several years. He retired in 1984 at the age of 70. Elwood enjoyed gardening, traveling and spending time with his seven children during his retirement.

He leaves to treasure his memory: France Schulz of Paullina, Iowa; seven children and their spouses: Jacqueline and Glenn Rullman of Winston Salem, North Carolina; Gary and Teresa Schulz of Rogers, Minnesota; Mark and Sue Schulz of Hartley, Iowa; Alicia Schulz and Henry Keuljes of Mansfield, Ohio; Faye and Andy Scott of Bend, Oregon; Matthew and Kathleen Schulz of Iowa City, Iowa; and Mary Jane and Steven Lund of Cherokee, Iowa.

Also left to cherish Elwood's memory are his sixteen grandchildren: Jeff Rullman and his wife Annette and Anne Rullman; Aaron, Jennifer and Jessica Schulz; Christopher, Todd and Sarah Schulz; Claire and Hannah Keuljes, Katie and Taylor Scott; Nathan , Alexandria ans Kari Schulz; Emily Lund and one great-grandchild, Bradley Rullmann
