Frances Porter Schulz, 91, died on January 3, 2013, at the Community Memorial Health Center in Hartley, Iowa, after a long and colorful and musical life.

She was born on September 23, 1921, in Fayetteville, Arkansas. She spent her youth between her maternal family home in Noel, Missouri, and her paternal family’s mission and business in Barranquilla, Columbia, South America. She completed her secondary education at Catholic schools in Columbia. Frances studied at the music conservatory in Barranquilla; she attended Sayre College in Louisville, Kentucky.

Frances married Elwood Schulz on April 3, 1941. They were married for 32 years. Most of those years were lived on the Schulz family farm near Germantown, Iowa, where they raised seven children together. Frances had grown up as a child well taken care of by her parents and her Aunt Tia, with no experience with children or homemaking. But as an adult, Frances fully embraced her life as a farm wife and mother. She learned to cook, sew, garden and can with skill and she did it all with a sense of enthusiasm and fun. Music was her special love. She was an accomplished musician and a dedicated piano and organ teacher to both youth and adults for over forty years. For decades Frances volunteered her services as a church organist and choir director in numerous churches. After her years on the farm, Frances moved to Paullina and worked as a nurse’s aide for many years.

She was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith and was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church in Germantown.

Frances leaves to mourn her passing seven children; Jacqueline (Glenn) Rullman of Winston Salem, North Carolina; Gary (Teresa) Schulz of Plymouth, Minnesota; Mark (Susan) Schulz of Hartley, Iowa; Alicia (Henry) Keultjes of Mansfield, Ohio; Faye (Andrew) Scott of Bend, Oregon; Matthew (Ping) Schulz of Pacific Grove, California; and Mary Jane (Steven) Lund of Cherokee, Iowa; eighteen grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren; a sister Patsy Jane (Bill) Brown of Smyrna, Tennessee; a sister-in-law Shirley Neunaber of Lubbock, Texas; numerous nieces, nephews; and countless dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, and parents.
