FRED A. WINKELHAUS
Fred A. Winkelhaus, the son of Carl and Anna Petersen Winkelhaus, was born at Clinton, Iowa November 19, 1893, and passed away at his farm home north of Hartley, Iowa on April 18, 1972 at the age of 78. He had resided at his home since 1922. He was educated in schools at Clinton and came to the Hartley area in 1913.
He served with the United States Army during World War I. Following his return to Hartley, he was united in marriage at Spencer, Iowa on December 22, 1920 to Ionia Walter. The couple became the parents of two daughters.
Mrs. Winklehaus passed away in 1939. Ht was a lifetime member of the Arthur Kirchhoff Post No. 288 of the American Legion at Hartley and received his 50 year pin.
Preceding him in death were his wife, his parents, a son-in-law in 1960, three brothers and three sisters.
Left to cherish his memory are his two daughters, Mrs. Ardis Barnes and Mrs. Donald (Lois) Christiansen, both of Hartley; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one brother, Mr. L. C. Winkelhaus of Chicago; Ill; and two sisters, Miss Freda Winkelhaus of Clinton and Mrs. Bertha Rockrohr of Maquoketa, Iowa, as well as his many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were conducted at the United Methodist Church in Hartley on Friday. April 21, 1972. Rev. Keith Scott officiated. Casket bearers were Harlan Tewes, Wm. Roghair, Gilbert Denny, Marvin Tewes, Virgil Treimer and Elmer Krebs. Military services were conducted at the graveside by Arthur W. Kirchhoff Post No. 288; Joel Randolph, commander. Burial was in Pleasant View Cemetery in Hartley with Baumgarten Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
