August "Gus" Jalas (1920-1997)

August Heinrich Diedrich Jalas, the son of August and Anna (Proehl) Jalas, was born March 12, 1920, at Sutherland, Iowa. He was baptized in Calumet, Iowa, in 1920 and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church, Paullina, Iowa in May of 1933. He attended country school near his home through the 7th grade and went to Paullina Lutheran Parochial School his 8th grade year. After 8th grade he helped with the family farm.

On January 26,1944, he married Evelyn Amendt. They farmed all their life near Sutherland. They moved to Storm Lake, Iowa in 1978, going into Real Estate. In July 1997, they moved back to Sutherland. To them were born six children: Delmar, Duane, Merle, Leon, Colleen and Wilma.

August passed from this life on July 22, 2006 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake, Iowa, reaching the age of 86 years, 4 months and 10 days. He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Sutherland until 1981, and then became a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake, Iowa and returning to Bethel in 1997. Over the years he has held several church offices. His hobbies were playing dart ball, dancing and enjoying his family and grandchildren.

Funeral services for August Jalas, age 86 of Sutherland, Iowa, who passed away Saturday, July 22, 2006, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake, Iowa. His services were held Tuesday, July 25, 2006 at 10:30 A.M. at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Sutherland, Iowa with Rev. Leroy Riemer officiating. Burial was in the Waterman Cemetery in Sutherland, Iowa. Arrangements were under the care of the Gaudian-Eldridge Funeral Home of Paullina, Iowa.

August leaves to cherish his memories, his wife, Evelyn Jalas; their children, Duane and his wife, Rosemary Jalas of Prentice, Wisconsin; Merle and his wife, Barbara Jalas of Sutherland, Iowa; Leon and his wife, Donna Jalas of Niangua, Missouri, Colleen and her husband, Richard Simm of Paullina, Iowa; a daughter-in-law, Jacqueline and her husband, Mark Puhrmann of Paullina, Iowa; and a son-in-law, Leo Schimmer of Storm Lake, Iowa; 15 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren, a brother-in-law, Don Ray of Marcus, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Deloras Jalas of Paullina, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded m death by his parents; a son, Delmar Jalas; a daughter, Wilma Schimmer; a great-grandson, Lucas Jalas; two sisters, Lucille Ray and Bertha Wittrock; and a brother, Roy Jalas.
