PIONEER RESIDENT PASSES AWAY

The funeral of John H Westphal was held on last Saturday afternoon at two o'clock at the farm home of the family. The services were in charge of the Rev C. N McMillan of the local Methodist church. The church choir furnished the music.

Mr. Westphal was one of the early settlers in this vicinity. He came to Sutherland. In the spring of 1884, and in 1886 came to Paullina. The family have lived on the same farm where now the son Carl lives since 1886. The interment was in the Paullina cemetery by the side of his wife who preceded him in November, 1931. Following is the obituary:

John H. Westphal was born on Aug 19th, 1861, in Holstein, Germany, and died at Paullina, Iowa, on February 2, 1933, at the age of 71 years, 5 months and 21 days. In the late fall of 1883 Mr Westphal was married to Regina Klouck in Bosr, Holsteln, Germany, and the following year, namely 1884 they came to America and to Sutherland, Iowa. At Sutherland Mr. Westphal worked on the railroad for one year, then worked as a farm hand for a year. In 1885 he came to the vicinity of Paullina where he worked as a farm, hand a year. He then rented a farm, and worked that until he bought the home place, where the family has lived since, and from which he was buried.

To their union were born three children. One died in infancy. Carl and his sister were born on the home place. The sister, Mrs. Wm Proehl died on March 6th, 1931, at Primghar, and is buried at Paullina. Mrs. Westphal died the following fall on November 24th, and is also buried at Paullina.

Mr Westphal had been sick for some time. He had an operation about a year ago. and had not recovered from that, so that his death was not unexpected. Since the death of Mrs. Westphal he had made his home with Carl on the home farm.

He leaves to mourn his passing, the son Carl and the family and the children of his daughter Mrs. Wm. Proehl, there being fourteen grandchildren, Also there are his brothers, William, of Paullina, and August and Gustave of Primghar. and two sisters, Lena, Mrs. P C. Peterson, of Gannvalley, S. D.; and Elizabeth, Mrs. M. Andlesen, of Chamberlain. S. D. A sister Doris, Mrs. Wm. Klink, preceded him in March, 1931.
