Gertrude (Lobbes) Hoekstra was born on December 28, 1900, at Le Mars, Iowa. Her parents were Christian and Anna Franscina (Brons) Lobbes. She lived her early youth in the Orange City, Iowa, area and later their family moved to the Roseland area of Chicago, Illinois, where she attended school through the eighth grade. She then first helped her Mother at home and later for a short time was employed at Pine Rest Christian Hospital. Their family later moved to Sheldon, Iowa, where she worked as a clerk at Hunt's Store in Sheldon.

She met Dan Hoekstra at Sheldon, Iowa, and they were married on March 11, 1925. They farmed in the Sheldon area until 1961, when they retired and moved into Sheldon. Dan Hoekstra passed away on September 1, 1983, and since that time she first resided at the Sheldon Christian Retirement Home, and the last 15 years she lived at Prairie View Home in Sanborn, Iowa.

Gertrude Hoekstra passed away on Wednesday, March 5, 2008, at Prairie View Home, at the age of 107 years and 68 days.

Those left to cherish her memories are her five children: Martin (Clara) Hoekstra of Sheldon, IA, Creston (Lucille) Hoekstra of Sheldon, IA, Annette (Harvard) Sneller of Sioux Center, IA, Theora (Roger) Whitman of Redlands, CA, Shirley (Dorward) Dykstra of Worthington, MN; 22 grandchildren (20 spouses); 61 great-grandchildren (9 spouses); 7 great-great-grandchildren; and many treasured nephews and nieces.

She was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church of Sheldon, Iowa, and enjoyed attending the Golden Hour Circle. She enjoyed her children and grandchildren, reading, traveling, playing games (especially Scrabble), and chocolate.

She lived a quiet life in the service of her precious Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. The Lord granted her an especially long life, considering that at birth she was not expected to live.

She was preceded in death by her parents; 13 siblings, her husband; one grandson, one great-grandson, and two great-great-grandsons.
