JAKE H. ELGERSMA 1920 —1992

Jake H. Elgersma, the son of Harry and Heka (Kramer) [Hattie] Elgersma, was born on March 26, 1920 near Sibley and later moved to the Sanborn area. He was a member of the Sanborn Christian Reformed Church and graduated from the Sanborn Christian School.

He enlisted in the Army in October, 1941 and was discharged in October 1945. He served over three and one-half years in the Pacific and was awarded the Bronze Star medal in the Battle of Saipan.

He was united in marriage to Caroline Van Kley on Nov. 6, 1946 at Rock Valley, Iowa. To this union five sons and three daughters were born. They farmed northeast of Sanborn for 43 years and in October, 1989 they moved to Sheldon.

He served in the Consistory in the Sanborn and Hartley Christian Reformed Churches where he also sang in the church choir. He was a board member of Western Christian High School for several years.

He died at Northwest Iowa Health Center at Sheldon, Iowa on Nov. 17, 1992 at the age of 72 years, seven months and 21 days.

He is survived by his wife, Caroline of Sheldon; his children: John and Myrna Wolfswinkel of Sheldon, Stanley and Linda of Cape May, N.J., Ron and Carol Porth of Heron Lake, Minn., Arlin and Ann of Sanborn, Robert, and Thomas of Sheldon, David and Marsha of Sanborn, and Randy and Laura Post of Rock Valley; 19 grandchildren; two great­grandchildren; four brothers: William, John and Raymond of Sanborn, and Sam of Primghar; and six sisters: Mrs. Sam (Josie) Van Den Berg of Sheldon, Mrs. Dick (Jennie) Vanden Berg of Artesia, Calif., Mrs. Richard (Effie) Starkenburg of Sibley, Mrs. Maynard (Tena) Elgersma of Sanborn, Mrs. George (Margaret) Veltman of Artesia, Calif., and Mrs. John (June) Van Dyke of Sanborn. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother and sister and grandchild.

Funeral services were held November 20 at the Sanborn Christian Reformed Church with Harry Zekveld officiating. Casket bearers were Terry Van Dyke, Mike Elgersma, Jerry Elgersma, Arnold Van Kley, Don Van Otterloo and Elmer Zomermaand. Janice Van Dyke sang "In the Sweet By and By." Congregational hymns were "Great Is Thy Faithfulness" and "By the Sea of Crystal." Evelyn Zekveld was organist.

Military graveside rites were by Earl T. Conaway Post No. 318 American Legion, Sanborn with burial in Roseland Cemetery, Sanborn. The Sanborn Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
