JAKE HAAGSMA

Jake Haagsma, son of Dirk and Bertha Haagsma was born March 2, 1888 at Alton and died September 15, 1961 at the age of 73. He grew to manhood in the Alton vicinity.

January 27, 1910 he was united in marriage to Gertrude Elgersma. They lived one year in Plymouth county and six months in Sioux County. The summer of 1912 they moved to Sanborn where they were engaged in farming. They retired in 1945 and moved into their home on West Third Street. He worked in a hardware store from 1945 to 1959. Since then he has been driving part time for Pete Kooistra.

Mr Haagsma was a member of the Sanborn Christian Reformed Church having joined soon after the church was organized here. He has served as Elder for several years.

In 1960 Mr and Mrs Haagsma celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

He was preceded in death by one son Peter, in infancy and five brothers and sisters passed away in infancy.

Survivors include his widow, two sons Dick of Grand Rapids, Mich., Jake Jr of Primghar, two daughters Mrs Paul [Jessie] Biemers, Sibley; Mrs Emmett [Birdie] Dummett, Sanborn; 11 grand children, eight great grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs Morris Zwiep [his twin] of Grand Rapids, Mich.; and Mrs Geo. Van Roekel of Sheldon.

The immediate family was here for the services.

Last rites were held Monday, Sept 18 with services at the Funeral Chapel at 1:00 pm and 1:30 at the Christian Reformed church. Rev Clifford Vander Ark officiated. Two hymns "God Be Merciful To Me" and "My God, How Wonderful Thou Art" were sung by Martin Dekkenga, Henry Koldenhoven, Mrs R. Bait and Mrs R. Vander Broek, accompanied by Mrs Henry Buteyn. Flower arrangement was in charge of Mrs Dick Veltkamp and Mrs Louis Kuiper. Casket bearers were elders of. the church: Henry Buteyn, Cornelius Ver Hoef, James Zormefeld, Charles Bootsma, Bernard Steensma and Gerrit De Vries. Interment in Roseland Cemetery.

Other relatives from a distance attending the services were Mr and Mrs Wm Baker, Grand Rapids, Mich., Mr and Mrs Bill Sinkey, Sheldon, Mr and. Mrs Jake Ver Mulm, Rock Valley; Ada Van Roekel, Sheldon— all nieces and Marion Wersma, Orange City, a nephew. Also Harry Elgersma. and Mrs Ed Navis of Waupun, Wisc.
