Gertrude E. Mehren was born in Marion Junction, S.D., June 15, 1888. At the age of fourteen she came to Sanborn, where she made her home with her brother, Henry Mehren. About two years ago, she visited in California, remaining there about one year. She returned sick and was constantly ill from that time to the day of her death, May 21, 1911.

She was patient and hopeful thro all the weary days of her illness, seeming to try to make the burdens of her family as light as possible.

She leaves to mourn her untimely death, a father in Holtville, Cal., one sister, Mrs. Madge Parson, of Hemmet, Cal., and one brother, Henry Mehren of Sanborn, Iowa.

Her mother preceded her to the unknown world, having died 18 years ago. A brother and sister also were waiting for her in the silent land.

While her death was not unexpected, the end brought deep grief to her large number of friends. She had resided in Sanborn the greater part of eleven years, having been graduated from the high shool in the class of '09. During vacations she was a saleslady for T.A. Roberts and her circle of friends was thus widened. She was ever kind, courteous and obliging. "None knew her but to love her." She was a friend in the true sense of the word. Her sweet presence will be missed. Life was dear to her, but she bowed in humble submissiveness to the Master's will. She had chosen her pall bearers and selected her hymns come time prior to her death, when a second opeation was deemed necessary. All that devoted relatives could do to prolong her life was without avail.

Funeral services were held at her late home Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. R.N. Burress of the Methodist Episcopal church. A mixed quartette rendered the songs of her choice, and Berence Daly in her bird like voice, sand, "Face to Face." The beautiful flower decked casket was borne by Messrs. Merrit Omer, Albert Guse, Oscar Hiverly, Walter Luke, Coleman Carl and Michael Kelley. Interment was made in the family lot in Roseland cemetery. The high school was dismissed for the afternoon, that they might attend the obsequies.
