He fired on engines for a time but returned to work in the round house, where he continued until he quit active service. He was officially retired on June 24, 1937.

On November 20, 1888, he was united in marriage with Miss Wilhelmina Guse at Sanborn, which has been the family home continuously since.

Mr. Guse had been a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Sanborn for over fifty years. He assisted in the building of the church edifice, being one of the earliest members. He was also affiliated with the B. of L. F. & E. He had received the "Gold Button" from the railroad company denoting 50 years of service with the road.

Mr. Guse was preceded in death by his wife, who passed away on June 13, 1930; also by a daughter, Mrs. John Neitzke, and a son, William.
