Mary Redmond Passed Away Last Thursday

After a short illness, Mary Redmond passed away at her home Thursday, February 1, 1940. Funeral services were held Saturday with Requiem High Mass at 10 a. m., Rev. Jos. T. Fitzpatrick officiating, with St. Cecilia's choir.

Mary Anne Redmond, eldest daughter of Patrick and Mary Sullivan Redmond, was born at Newtown, in Bucks county, Pennsylvania. A few years later she moved with her parents to Monmouth, Ill. and in 1872 moved to Henry county, Iowa, where she attended Howes Academy at Mount Pleasant and also attended Drake University at Des Moines. Miss Redmond first taught at Seward, Nebraska and in rural schools in Henry county, Iowa, after which she was Principal of the Public Schools at Ashton, Iowa. Later she taught for a number of years in the Sanborn Public Schools., Among the floral offerings was a lovely piece presented by 42 of her former pupils who still reside in Sanborn.

She is survived by two brothers and two sisters: Helena Redmond of Marshalltown, la., Mrs. E. J. Wheatley, of Danville, Ill., Steve Redmond of Sanborn and T. S. Redmond of Los Angeles, Calif.

Of Miss Redmond it would seem that her motto of life had been:

I'd like to think when life is done
That I had filled a needed post,
That here and there I'd paid my fare
With more than idle talk and boast;
That I had taken gifts divine,
The breath of life and manhood fine,
And tried to use them now and then
In service for my fellow man.
I'd like to think that here and there,
When 1 am gone, there shall remain
A happier spot that might have not
Existed had I toiled for gain;
That some one's cheery voice and smile
Shall prove that I had been worth while;
That I had paid with something fine
My debt to God for life divine.
(—Edgar A. Guest)

Out of town relatives who attended the funeral were Mrs. Jerome McGivern of Marcus, and W. P. Red-mond ands daughter, Alice, of Sioux Falls, S. Dak.; Mr. and Mrs. John Stoterau of Hartley, Helen Redmond of Tama, la., Mrs. George Harrington of Sioux City, Helena Redmond of Marshalltown, Lloyd Redmond of Des Moines, Mrs. Harvey Patton and Mrs. Harry Fahrenkrog, both of Hartley.
